Music
(To hell with MTV, we really
know music)

Wiseguy
here. The Screw Magazine
Big Wigs (namely our fearless editor) almost wet his pants when the
father of one of our writers found this site and was pissed off that his
son’s name was on it! So, we
can’t use our names now, so I will be known as this from now on, since
it’s already my e-mail address and all.
So many singles… I had to work overtime for this article.
We got some great new alternative releases this week, and any
loyal Screw Magazine reader knows I luuuvv my alternative music. So this
issue ought to be a doozy.
Oh yeah, and the name ban doesn’t diminish e-mail at all.
So you can still try to PROVE ME WRONG at [email protected]

Three
Doors Down
Duck
and Run
Album:
The Better Life
Release Date: Feb 8 2000
Label: UNIVERSAL
|
The
ultimate one-hit wonders are back and better than ever!
The beat and rhythm of this song will really get your
blood pumping. Next
to Hashpipe, this song probably has the best music of any single
on this list. Just
don’t pay attention to the lyrics.
It’s just another cry for help from a former high
school nerd in song form. Taking the lame lyrics into consideration, I give this song a
6.

Dave
Navarro
Rexall
Album:
Trust No One
Release Date:
Jun 19 2001
Label: CAPITOL
|
This single was
better than I expected from “Mr. Former Jane’s Addiction /
Red Hot Chili Peppers.” Most
solo trials bomb horribly.
Remember Chris Cornell?
Exactly! But
this song was okay. Just
don’t take the suicidal interludes to heart.
It’s got a great rhythm.
And wouldn’t you know it?
Dave’s not a bad singer either.
Maybe Jane’s Addiction should’ve put him up front.
They would’ve lasted longer – but anyway!
I give it a 5.

Weezer
Hashpipe
Album: Weezer (2001)
Release Date: May 15 2001
Label: INTERSCOPE RECORDS
|
What the hell is this? All these bands we haven’t heard from since freaking 1995
are all invading the music scene at the same time!!!
That’s okay though, cuz so far I’m liking what I
hear. This song
kicks so much ass. The
rhythm is one of the best I’ve ever heard.
Combine that with those one-of-a-kind Weezer vocals, and
you get yourself a song worthy of a 10.

Stone Temple Pilots
Days of the Week
Album: Shangri-La
Dee Da
Release Date:
June 19 2001
Label: ATLANTIC
|
Monday
– HFS played this song.
I really liked it,
so I downloaded it.
Tuesday –
listened to this song.
It’s better than
good, better than good; I’m happy.
Wednesday – sat
down to write.
What rating should
I, give to this, amazing song?
Thursday – I made
a decision.
It gets a 10!
It gets a 10! Deserves it.
If you want a
really great song then, listen to me,
download

Coldplay
Shiver
Album: Parachutes
Release Date: Nov 7 2000
Label: CAPITOL
|
I
hate this song. I hate Coldplay. This
song is annoying. So
annoying in fact, that when you turn your radio down, the damn
Brit singing starts screaming louder just to annoy you.
I’ve wasted enough space on this crappy band.
“Shiver” gets a 2.
If you need further explanation as to why I have given
this song a 2, first kick yourself in the ass for being
oblivious to the insane amount of crapiness, then e-mail me.

Eve 6
Here's to The Night
Album: Horrorscope
Release Date:
Jul 25 2000
Label: RCA |
This
is a song I’m sure will be playing at graduations and proms
across the country this year.
Eve 6 decides to mellow down for their newest single, and
proves that “different” is not always necessarily “bad”.
Listening to this song is a different experience for
everyone. It will
bring about varying emotions in many different people.
But one thing these people will all have in common is
this: They will all
come away from it thinking “God, that’s such a great
song!” This is exactly how I feel about this masterpiece, easily Eve
6’s best single yet. I’m
gonna have to dig deep here and give out another 10. |

311
You Wouldn't Believe
|
God,
there’s so many bands we haven’t heard from in awhile coming
back this week. Why
do they all have to make singles at the same time? Makes so much damn work for me.
But I’ll take the extra work when I get to listen to
this song. Just
like always, 311 delivers with another great hit.
This is Classic 311, which is exactly what we’ve grown
to love. Go out and
download it, and you’ll see why it gets a 9.

Fenix TX
Threesome
Album: Lechuza
Release Date:
May 22 2001
Label: MCA
|
Glad to see Fenix
TX with another single. Just
give “Threesome” a listen.
It’s a wonderfully done song.
Great beat, great singing, great everything.
Great, great, great…
Plus, IT’S A SONG ABOUT GROUP SEX!!
Well, not really, but you can’t go wrong with a title
like that. Fenix TX
had a hit awhile ago called “My Fault”.
That was one of the best songs I’d heard in a long
time, and I was worried that this band would become another
one-hit wonder. Hopefully
“Threesome” will prevent this. It gets an 8.

Pennywise
Fuck Authority
Album: Land of the Free?
Release Date: Jun 19 2001
Label: EPITAPH RECORDS
|
Pennywise!!!
Hell yeah!!! Anyone who knows anything about punk music knows that these
guys have been punk’s unsung heroes for quite some time now.
As younger acts such as Blink 182 and Papa Roach go
mainstream, these wily veterans have been left underground for
years. I’m glad
they’re finally getting some airplay.
This is the perfect song to play to get you pumped up
for… well… whatever it is you need pumping up for.
If you like it, do these guys a favor and try to support
them; they deserve it. “F***
Authority” gets a 7.

Blink 182
The Rock Show
Album: Take Off Your
Pants and Jacket
Not yet
Released
|
Yes,
Blink 182 is punk, even if they haven’t been acting like it
lately. If this
song is any indication to the kind of album “Take Off Your
Pants and Jacket” (hehehehehe) will be, then I’m damn glad
Blink is getting out of their current pop disaster and returning
to their punk roots! I sure do miss the days of “Josie” and “Dammit”…
But back to the song at hand, I really can’t find
anything wrong with it. The
only blemish I find in this song is that it sounds exactly like
every Blink song from back in the day.
It’s great that you’re coming home, guys, just try to
keep it original. “The
Rock Show” gets a 7.

Sum 41
Fat Lip
Album: All Killer No Filler
Release Date: May 8 2001
Label: POLYGRAM RECORDS
|
Have you seen this video yet?
It’s so great. When
I watched it, I was surprised at how well it depicted teenagers.
This is such a great song, and the video makes it even
better. The sights
and sounds made me want to be there.
Everything from the concert with Sum 41 to the girls in
the alley was real. I’m
so tired of all those videos, shows, and movies directed at
teens that think they’re doing a good job creating something
real, but are failing horribly.
I’m sorry; I’m not giving enough attention to the
song itself. It’s
just that something in that video struck a chord with me. “Fat
Lip” already got a great rating, but the video pushed it over
the top. I give it
a 9.

Mya,
Pink, Lil’ Kim, Christina Aguilera
Lady
Marmalade
|
You
know right off the bat this isn’t going to be pretty.
Let’s break this song down piece by piece, shall we?
Mya – Oh… My… GOD
you’re hot!
Pink – OKAY,
YOU’RE PINK! WE
GET IT! Stop dying
your whole damn body Easter colors!
And while you’re at it, find another job – you
can’t sing!!!
Lil’ Kim – I
really like your music, but you just don’t fit in this song
too well. We’ve got a bunch of malnourished divas belting their
hearts out here. Your
stocky body, huge breasteses, and rap style just aren’t
working.
Christina Aguilera
– Listen to me very carefully, because I’m only going to say
this once. You have
the kind of voice that makes people want to change the channel!
The only thing you had going for you was your looks, and
now you screwed that up by becoming some kind of mix between
Snoop Dogg and Crazytown’s lead singer.
Way to go.
This gets a rating
of 2. The only
reason it didn’t get a ZERO is that I got to look at Mya while
I was watching the video.

City High
What Would You Do?
Album: City High
Release Date: May 22 2001
Label: INTERSCOPE RECORDS
|
I just have
one question – Where the hell did you three come from?
I’ve had this theory for a while… see… I think MTV
just puts a random no name group on TV and then brainwashes
their audience into thinking they are good…
MTV:
Here’s the new one from the smash hit group, City High.
Average
Teenager: I’ve
never heard of them before.
MTV:
City High is on MTV.
MTV is so cool, we decide what’s cool.
If you don’t like City High, you’re not cool.
Average
Teenager: No, no, I
want to be cool! I
love City High!
If this is
the power MTV has over the future of America, then we’re all
in a lot of trouble. Oh
yeah, the rating. This
song stinks on ice; it gets a 3.

Rehab
It Don't Matter
Album: Southern
Discomfert
Release Date:
Oct 24 2000
Label: SONY |
This
duo has a perfect mix of rapping and harmonizing.
I think this song is excellent, and I give it an 8.
I hope Rehab becomes even more successful than now.
But you know the best thing about their current success?
This is a duo consisting of an Eminem wannabe and an
overweight man with a good voice.
I’m so glad to see a real group begin to make it big.
The fact that this is not another manufactured mainstream
group really makes me happy.

Featured Underground
Artist: Compulsive Behavior

What is underground music all
about? No one group could describe it better than Compulsive
Behavior. A mix of various rock and punk roots, Compulsive Behavior
is a rapidly growing four man group. Formed in the spring of 1995, Mike Walls, Nick Mansperger and Mike Quade began the band as a trio. “There really was no intention of doing anything except playing some music that we thought was good,” says Nick about the band’s formation. “Everything that’s happened since has happened naturally, we never try to force
anything.” Do not, however, be mislead by their easy-going attitude. Compulsive Behavior is a notoriously hard working band, writing and performing around Baltimore and the surrounding counties. After a year, they released their first EP, “Crushed.” Well received by the local scene, CB felt it was time to expand their horizons and add a fourth member. They promptly stole John Glancy from another local band. “He played great, we got along with him, and his band sucked. It seemed like a logical choice to all of us,” says Mike
Walls. Since the addition of John on guitar, CB continued to play locally and attract a broad following. “There’s no one type of person who likes us,” says John. “We have pretty diverse crowds at our shows.” The band released their first full length album, “Liquid Pop,” in 1997. The album sold out in a
matter of months. The following year saw the release of the band’s second full length album “Trichotillomania.” When asked for his thoughts on their latest effort, Mike Walls says, “It’s pretty different from everything we’ve done before. We’ve never stuck to one sound or style anyway, but this album has been the beginning of a radical departure for us. We’ve been experimenting more and more over the past year, so our next release should be interesting...” What kind of reaction do they expect? “We never know what to expect, we just do what we do. People either love us or hate us, but no one is indifferent.”
For more information, check out more info of the band at mp3.com.
